New stand for track & field athletics stadium Allmend in Lucerne

In course of the reconstruction of the Allmend sports facilities in the Swiss town of Lucerne, a new stand for the its athletics stadium was built. Architecturally, the installation is integrated into its new surroundings and clad with trapezoidal steel profiles by ArcelorMittal.

The old Allmend soccer stadium, home of FC Lucerne since 1934, was demolished in 2009 due to safety reasons in order to be replaced by a highly modern sports campus. This complex includes a new multi-purpose stadium, a new stand for the outdoor track and field athetics stadium, a sports building with indoor pool and fitness centre, two trefoil-shaped residential towers, various installations for other sports and extensive green spaces.

This new complex, designed by local architects Daniele Marques and Iwan Bühler, is characterized by its delicate architecture and soft shapes. The different constructive volumes, conceived mainly without sharp edges, determine the outdoor area in order to be conceived as a coherent space.

Lucerne's outdoor athletics stadium, a 400 m round track, is located at the east of the stadium. The track was repaired, only the main stand was demolished in course of the reconstruction project. The town of Lucerne commissioned the construction of a new, modern stand for the athletics outdoor field right next to the new multi-purpose stadium. In order to integrate the stand into the surrounding architectural complex, the same architectural style, materials and colours were used.

ArcelorMittal steel

The roof and façade cladding of the new stand for the outdoor athletics stadium was realized with trapezoidal steel profiles of the type 44/180, supplied by ArcelorMittal Construction Switzerland. The profiles are coilcoated on both sides with Hairexcel (60 μm), in the same golden shade as the rest of the buildings in the sports complex.

The new main stand offers 1950 covered seats, almost doubling the capacity of the previous stand. In its interior, there are an 80 m running track with 4 lanes including a long jump pit and a box for pole vaulters and various rooms for storage. The club and training rooms of the Lucerne club of track and field athletics are located on the ground floor of the new stadium.

The stand is operative since summer 2011, it was opened shortly before the official inauguration of the new multi-purpose stadium swissporarena which was celebrated in September 2011. The two residential towers and the sports building with indoor pool and fitness centre were opened in 2012.
